Back and Forth and Forth and Back
Video installation; San Francisco/Stuttgart, January/September 2004; shown
at Galerie 22, Stuttgart.
A small slice of sandy beach, such as found near San Francisco - just about the size of a shipping container - is transferred into a gallery space in Germany.
Visitors can relax on air mattresses and watch freight ships entering and leaving the Bay of San Francisco. The repetitive sound of foghorn signals guiding the ships through the narrow portal of the Golden Gate serves as ambient background.
With the continuous flow of goods going in and out of this massive center of population, the piece juxtaposes a romantic ocean with the reality of mass production and mass consumption, which modern First World society relies upon.
