Against All Odds
video installation, size ca. 20x16 ft / 7x5 m; Amsterdam, March 2005
A 17th century map of Amsterdam is thinly sprayed on the ground with sand. The water canals are spared out and form a line drawing.
The video projection addresses my perceptions when exploring the city on foot. It focuses on light and reflections in a city dominated by water. The text combines my experiences as a stranger, impressions local people contributed and unique events in Amsterdam’s history.
A soft sound collage of modern city life and a medieval music rehearsal in the city's oldest church emphasize the long history. My footsteps can be heard as I map the city by walking.
A different version of this piece was shown at Inkijk Gallery for Amsterdam’s Roode Loper Festival in September 2005. The map was sprayed on the gallery window, which is located in a subway station.
