Isolation
Sound installation in an abandoned house in Mooste, Estonia; August 2004

During an art symposium (PostsovhoZ 4) in the village of Mooste, Estonia I investigated the concept of “isolation”, which had been chosen as a theme for the symposium.

I interviewed all symposium participants as well as organizers and staff members about their conception of “isolation”, both on a personal level as well as in context to the geographical location of Estonia on the northern fringes of Europe; and particularly in context to life in a small rural village such as Mooste.

I created a sound collage with the content of the interview contributions, re-spoken by 2 speakers (one female, one male). This was played in an abandoned, barred, dark house in Mooste. The narrative was played back from 5 different sources within the small room. Approaching the player devices visitors were able to pick up details of the interviews within the dense net of overlapping voices.
